are you trying to be some kind of redneck viking? Gross.
Kjartan=kieran?
777 likes? I almost hate to make it 778 lol But I must do what I must do
Yrki sounds like the Swedish word 'yrka' which can mean to propose/suggest something, or to present/put forward.
Excellent reading! 👍👍👍
Come to Trondheim please! We are THE city to visit regarding viking and medieval age in Norway.
Love ur vids but had to use subtitles to hear you :(
Loved the glass break ad-transition.
the shy theory is same for swedish also, sky, skugga (shadow) and skygg. but today skygg means more like elusive rather than shy which would be blyg, but im guessing its the same meaning originally. also himmel is usually used today for sky, but sky works as well. skyfall means downpour of rain. but interestingly only himmel or himlen is used double to describe heaven, sky is just sky.
Hello Jackson, im trying to figure out how to translate "The Guardian" (or defender or any other synonymous referred as) to younger futhark but im finding very vague and diverse information all over the internet, any tip on how to write that or where to find proper information? it's the name of a Viking shield from around 1100 AD
I watched all the way through. (I'm a somewhat knowledgeable non-professional.)
The tone of speech and usage of glottal stops in my ears is much closer to my West Jutland mother tongue and I don't really hear any traces of West Norwegian in it. The mediaeval Low German element would logically have come into Shaetlan via Danish.
Don't oversimplify when comparing Nordic languages, e.g. by claiming that "Norwegian" has three genders, thus including dialects of Norway. While Danish has inly two. The variations of Danish dialects is much more outspoken than anywhere else in the region. Several Danish dialects have preserved the female gender as well.
whats incredible about this video is the lack of wind noise in the mic.
Don't forget Maltese!
Great content ! I would love to know if the chapter "the gates of hel" is accurate on youger futhark ?
Is there any plan to record this translation as an audiobook? Poetic Edda and Saga of the Volsungs is on pretty regular repeat for me on audible. I have a much better time absorbing these narratives when I can listen to them too.
Thank you for all you do! I hope I get to see you live one day.

I like these videos but historical linguistics really seems to be a men's world. Does that reflect the make-up of the profession?

Fun fact: if you physically want to go to Hell, there's a small town in Norway, just north of Trondheim, called "Hell". I've been to Hell and back many times. I toke the highway to Hell, and had a Hell of a time. True story.
Congratulations on winning the Jackson Crawford Award for Excellence! Woohoo! Bravo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You will be better if you joined Islam Are different gods better, or is God one and all-powerful? Islam is to believe that Allah is the only god He did not give birth, was not born, and did not have a wife You must believe in all of His messengers and angels And know that God sees you and sees me and He is above the seven heavens The lower sky is the blue one above you and between you and it is a distance of five hundred years Its thickness is five hundred years And between it and the sky after it is five hundred years And no one knows what is between them except God Likewise, there are five hundred years between every heaven and another The thickness of each sky is five hundred years The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, reached there with God willing, the One King is Allah And when he got there, he climbed further on a flap And then he began to cross the veils of light, with the permission of his Lord And around him are angels walking with him Seventy thousand veils of light, the thickness of each veil a distance of five hundred years And then he came forward alone And he crossed other veils, the number of which only God knows When he reached the carpet , his Lord, glory be to Him, spoke to him This is the religion of Islam It is the religion of truth To bear witness that God is true And to bear witness that all of His messengers are true And to bear witness that the angels of God are true And know that God sees you And he sees me He sees all creation In the heavens and on the earth and what is between them and what is under the earth All of this is his property, he has no partner This is an argument for you, so do not say that you have not received the truth The Hour is counting upon you, so do not be among the heedless. Convert to Islam, it will be good for you
It is very modern of us to search for authenticity of any tradition through translation of texts. As if the words of a story are more real than images themselves. Nobody used an alphabet to measure human experience unti very recently in our history. Before this, the stories we told our children did very much evolve almost as if they were alive themselves. And reflected our own emphasis and wisdom. Now even Pagan traditions are institutionalized, anywhere they possibly can be. Words and letters are not alive. They do not define history. And they certainly are not the territory that they merely point to. So the critique that a persons academic knowledge or letteredness is a measure of their authority on a Tradition is dubious. Who is the proprietor of Tradition?
Untrustworthy is also one name I would use for tricky one eye
Such a fascinating discussion! As a Christian I've had a recent interest in the evolution of these terms, especially given their outsized influence on modern Christian thought, despite the bulk of that thought being (as you rightly point out) non-biblically based. Of course, there has been a growing movement of contemporary Bible scholars such as N.T. Wright who have thankfully pushed back on that, but it's still intriguing to study how we got here. It's also worth noting that the understanding of heaven as an afterlife destination is not native to the Bible's text. The Hebrew and Greek terms translated as heaven both refer also to the sky, and exclusively in the plural in the original languages. However, it was considered common knowledge in ancient Semitic cosmology that spiritual beings (of all types) resided in the skies, as opposed to humans who occupy the land, and the bodies of water which represented primordial chaos. But the closest thing to an afterlife presented in the Bible is Sheol (the OT place of the dead), Hades (the NT place of the dead) and Abraham's Bosom (the place of the righteous dead). The NT also introduces the mysterious term of believers being "with Christ" after death and before their bodily resurrection. But ultimately, despite what many of us grew up hearing in church, the orthodox Christian belief of our eternal destination is not a disembodied heaven, but rather an embodied life in a renewed and perfect creation in which heaven and earth are one.
I didn't recognize either person, but when it started playing i was like, wow, sounds just like dr. crawford. Peering closely, Yes it's him. Looking forward to seeing the whole video.
Oh excited to get this. As a fan of books like "An Early Meal" and basic archaeobotany made the comment about mushrooms pretty fun to hear! Thanks for this interview :)
Could be worse: Serbs study both Cyrillic and Latin script.
The book of properties sources of revenue, ecclestial rules etc of the Ribe episcopate written 1290-1518 is called Avia Ripensis, in Danish always referred to as "Ribe Oldemor". Could it be a deeply rooted tradition to name an important old book etc. OLDEMOR? I put my money on this simple and lovely explanation of the title of the Edda.
11:13 What about irregularization? E.g. "sneak/snuck/sneaked" is relatively recent. "yeet/yote/yeeted" is entirely new. "think/thought/thunk" is also sometimes used.
Traditional Norwegian food? Taco Friday and Pizza Grandiosa and a kvikk lunsj, and orange and hot chocolate when på tur
People have sadly unironically fell for this hook line and sinker, and propagating this as truth
I've gotten long pepper from Etsy. The story of long pepper is fascinating too.
Research suggests that the giant Lågi (flame) not related to Loki, may have had a more prominent role in oral folk tradition and local folklore, especially in connection with household fire and cooking. Some scholars believe that he was possibly a more prominent figure in older, agrarian societies.
Dr Crawford, I've been following you for years, and I go back and reveiw old videos semi-frequently. Not all of us can afford traditional education, and RUclips is a FANTASTIC resource for those of us who get much joy out of studying this, but can't justify the financial expense. I seriously doubt I am the only person out there who feels that way about your work.
ceiling @11:20
good one
Great discussion -- in a long series of fascinating interviews. Thank you, Jackson and Dr. Vedeler, for sharing your expertise.
You're going to build it and then burn it to the ground.. 🤔 🤷♀️
I saw you on the NRK news three days ago, and since I didn't know you were going to be in Norway I was quite surprised to suddenly see you pop up there 😅 Hope you have a wonderful and interesting time while you're here in Norway. All the best to you and take care.
